  • About Silly Signs

A site dedicated to the silly, funny, comic or just ridiculous signs of the world.

This is our collections of crazy signs from around the world.  For one reason or another they have all made us laugh, or pause and re read them.  We hope you find them funny as well. As we have gathered them together we come to realize how many made it into the collection as a result of the slight linguistic differences between US English and UK English.  I am English, my wife is American and it is very true that Britain and the United States are two nations separated by a common language.

As well as signs we see around our home are of New York state, there are signs we see on our regular visits to the UK.  Anyone following us would wonder what on earth we are doing as we drive cross country.  We will be making good progress when suddenly the car becomes a flurry of windmilling arms pointing and gesticulating, then we find a place to turn round and head back to get just the right shot of another silly sign.

Some of the signs one or the other of us grew up seeing daily and never gave a second thought to - it took a fresh pair of eyes from a different culture to see humor in the sign.  (Or should that be humour?  Two great nations separated by a common language!)

Do enjoy this blog in the spirit it is intended.  Yes, we will post signs from other countries where the odd translation gives us pause for thought. This is not meant as a slight on the country or the authority that put up the sign.  At least they tried and I suspect their English is way better than my Japanese/French/any other language.

If you have photos of any signs that you think deserve a place on this website, please email them to us at signs@mysillyroadsigns.com with a description of where you saw the sign.

    Why the advertising?

Simple - it brings in a few cents per month which go to help cover my hosting costs. If ever it exceeds that I plan on quitting the day job and dedicating my life to hunting down signs to take pictures of. I have this planned out - it involves a lot of travel interspersed with hard work on the ski slopes and beaches of the world. Better keep going at the day job then!
